Stephane Grappelli
Sound of Jazz
Release Date: z
Label: Cleo

This CD has appeared on several different labels, each with their own problems. No credit is given to the other sidemen on this CD, which include guitarist Marc Fossett and bassist Jon Burr, and a nonexistent interview is listed as the final track. The music itself is quite enjoyable, including a waltzing "Star Eyes" in which Woods' brash alto sax contrasts with Grappelli's softly swinging violin; "Caravan," which has spirited playing by both Woods and Bellson (Grappelli sits out); and a samba rendition of "It Might As Well Be Spring," which omits Woods. "Have You Met Miss Jones" features swinging solos by Woods on clarinet, Fossett and Burr. Even with the labeling shortcomings of this Cleo release, it is an improvement over the Who's Who in Jazz CD of this music, which clips a note from the opening number "You Took Advantage of Me" and also misidentifies it as "All of Me."
