Speer
Sixes & Sevens
Release Date: 2003 07 22
Label: In Music We Trust

The most obvious point of reference for this Austin-based quartet is the Ben Folds Five, with which it shares the characteristics of a piano-playing leader and a sometimes adventurous style of intelligent power pop. Vocally, frontman and songwriter James Speer has more in common with Will Hoge, though he doesn't quite share Hoge's knack for the indelible hook. Sixes & Sevens is a solid debut effort, and it does tend to grow on you -- while "Soak the Radio" and the gorgeous "Balance" hit the spot immediately with beautifully crafted choruses and (in the latter case) vocal harmonies that are lush and stirring beyond all reason, other songs need a little while to sink in. The gently moving "It Would Seem" is one such number, as is "Blood Red Eyes." One or two others never sink in at all, but that's OK; it's only their first album. Speer is going to bear watching.
