In the Army Now
Release Date: 1994 09 15
Running Time: 35:20
Label: Intrada

Other than a call reporting the death of a loved one, it's difficult to imagine a scenario more horrifying than picking up the phone and hearing the words "Hey buddy, it's Pauly Shore, you wanna score my new movie?" Robert Folk not only answered the call, but with In the Army Now he delivers a score far better than this wretched Shore comedy deserves. Recalling the composer's breakthrough Toy Soldiers with its bold, militaristic themes, the music cleverly fuses conventional action passages with a series of goofy comic elements that fall just shy of irritating. With its dynamic brass flourishes and crashing cymbals, In the Army Now is best when focused on the film's combat sequences; its comedic themes try just a bit too hard, as if to compensate for a star who's about as funny as a Holocaust documentary. Still, ask yourself this: could you have done any better? Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide
