Remo Palmier

Remo Palmieri (who changed his last name later in life to Palmier) made a strong impression during the early years of the bebop era with his advanced guitar playing. However, by 1947 he was a full-time studio musician, and little was heard of him in the jazz world for most of the next 30 years. In 1978, Palmieri led his only session as a leader, this relaxed affair with pianist Lou Levy (who doubles on organ), bassist Ray Brown, and drummer Jake Hanna. Palmieri performs his original "Side Track," a few obscurities (including "Is That What You Wanted Alfred," which is based loosely on "So What," and the theme from "How Green Was My Valley") and a few advanced standards, with Herbie Hancock's "Dolphin Dance" being a highlight. Surprisingly, there are no bebop standards on this lyrical and swinging set, and it is a pity that Remo Palmieri (an underrated talent) never had an encore. This LP has not yet been reissued on CD.
