Red Foley
Old Master
Release Date: 196z
Label: Decca

Old Master was Red Foley's last solo album before his death. None of the songs were hits and, in fact, Foley hadn't had a solo hit in nearly a decade at the time the album was made. The songs are a mixture of old and new, from classics like "South" and "Hang Your Head in Shame," to a pair of good Mel Tillis/Wayne Walker compositions. The second side of the album is heavy on ballads that allow Foley to exercise his ability as a country crooner with a Bing Crosby influence. In the late '60s, Foley, like his labelmate Webb Pierce, sounded like he was stuck in a time warp where his music would always sound the same no matter what was happening around him, but his ability and familiarity ensured a reliable product.
