Paul Winter

As with other recordings in this series, this CD comes from the outstanding Jazz Casual television program hosted and produced by Ralph Gleason in the early '60s. This one is split between a set featuring the Paul Winter Sextet and one with Bola Sete (Djalma de Andrade) with the Vince Guaraldi Trio. As with the others, there are fascinating interviews with the performers about the music and the backgrounds of the players. The hard-driving Winter sessions are particularly revealing, particularly for those who are unfamiliar with the saxophonist's roots in hard bop. His trumpeter, the rarely recorded Richard Whitsell, is a special delight, showing himself to be a terrific improviser who easily negotiates the difficult chord changes. The unsung Jay Cameron also distinguishes himself on bari sax with compelling improvisations. Winter proves himself an excellent saxophonist who fully absorbed the jazz tradition, while influenced by Latin music. The second set features the Brazilian sounds of Bola Sete, with Vince Guaraldi's trio. This much more laid-back session highlights a combination of popular Brazilian tunes plus originals by Guaraldi and Sete. Sete's guitar weaves lovely lines, calm and melodic, that reveal an extraordinary aptitude for early multicultural acculturation. Steven Loewy, All Music Guide Tracks:
