Name Taken's full-length Fiddler debut finds the California-based combo working the usual emo angles to typical effect. "Control" gets Hold On off to a rousing start, with a pogo-worthy roil emphasizing the meaning behind vocalist/bassist Chad Atkinson's emphatic lyrics. "Don't stop this is your life," he pleads. "Stop selling to yourself that you want control." Elsewhere, "It Sounds Prettier in Spanish" gets the nod for best song title, and "A Year Spent Cold" ticks along at an upbeat Jimmy Eat World clip. "This Was Never" and "Clear and Conscious" are dramatic slices of slow-building emo meaning, while "I Quit My Scene" works the template of atmospheric verse rushing into a chorus laden with harmony. While they have their moments of groove or heartfelt vocal melody, its really Name Taken's adherence to established formula -- as well as Beau Burchell's glossy production -- that keeps Hold On afloat. Fans of similar young combos like Early November or Stars Hide Fire should have some interest in this. Johnny Loftus, All Music Guide Tracks:
