Minnie Pearl
Queen of the Grand Ole Opry
Release Date: 1994 07 18
Running Time: 32:09
Label: Legacy/Columbia

Queen of the Grand Ole Opry focuses solely on the stand-up comedy of Minnie Pearl, eschewing her occasional forays into music. The shoddy packaging provides no dates for the performances or other information, and in fact the six tracks are simply named "Track One" through "Track Six." Such deficiencies aside, this is a passable document of Minnie Pearl's schtick, which didn't change substantially over time, and which occasionally borrowed from other sources (Uncle Dave Macon, for one). Her humor was straightforward, repetitive and corny with occassional (very) mild double-entendres, and might test the patience even of fervent Jerry Clower fans. Whatever prejudice or fondness one may have regarding Minnie's brand of country comedy, her significance in the history of the Grand Ole Opry is indisputable, and here is a record of her act for those who care to investigate.
