Over the Edge
Release Date: 2004 08 03
Label: Deadline Music/Frontier

Countless veteran classic rock bands from the '70s experienced severe growing pains upon entering the '80s. However, one band that did not experience problems continuing to crank out hits was Jefferson Starship, whose sound became even more radio friendly upon the arrival of singer Mickey Thomas. Although they resembled absolutely nothing of their preceding band, Jefferson Airplane, by this point, Jefferson Starship (later just Starship) enjoyed a string of Top Ten hits during the '80s before going the way of the buffalo. Little was heard from Thomas after Starship was laid to rest until the release of his solo debut, Over the Edge, in 2004. Fans of the Starship will be overjoyed to learn that Thomas has continued on in the same musical direction, as he's enlisted such '80s-era rock veterans as Night Ranger/Damn Yankees' Jack Blades, Toto's Steve Lukather, plus Journey's Jonathan Cain and Neal Schon to not only guest, but also to write the majority of the album. As a result, songs such as the album-opening title track, "One World," and "Eyes Wide Open" could have all been MTV hits; that is, if it was still 1985. Greg Prato, All Music Guide
