In The Night-Time was Michael Henderson's third album and his only gold album (although its successor, 1980's Wide Receiver, sold respectably). Fueling Night Time impressive sales was "Take Me, I'm Yours," a charming duet with Detroit singer Rena Scott that went to number three on Billboard's R&B singles chart and became his biggest hit. "Take Me, I'm Yours" certainly didn't hurt the singer/bassist's reputation as a master of smooth romantic soul; nor did sexy slow jams like "We Can Go On," "Whisper In My Ear," "Am I Special" and the title song (a 15 R&B hit). Funk isn't a high priority on this Buddah date (which The Right Stuff reissued on CD in 1994), but what little funk it does contain is first-rate. As sophisticated and classy as Henderson was on ballads, the mostly instrumental "Happy" proves that he had no problem turning around and delivering the nastiest of funk grooves.
