The 1980s were the beginning of an extraordinary rebound in Mel Tormé's career. This encore performance from Marty's (originally issued as Encore at Marty's, New York) features the singer in top form exploring favorites from the Great American Songbook as only he could perform them. A consummate showman, he loved engaging the audience with a bit of light comedy and thoughtful arrangements, Tormé frequently uses excerpts of other songs to introduce individual pieces, such as scatting ("Manteca"), as he works his way into "Day In, Day Out," or detours into quotes from a number of different songs in "Watch What Happens" (the latter track being unique to this Jazz Door reissue, as it doesn't appear on earlier editions of this album). Well accompanied by pianist Mike Renzi, bassist Jay Leonhart and long time drummer Donny Osborne, Mel Tormé clearly had the audience in the palm of his hand on this magical evening in 1982.
