Maxine Brown

A trio of females on ten dishes: two by Irma Thomas, and four each by Maxine Brown and Ronnie Dickerson. Dickerson's a new name to most, but her voice is very similar to Ronnie Spector's of Ronettes fame. Though Brown is from the Big Apple and Thomas the Big Easy, they share many similarities: Neither gets as distraught as Linda Jones or as melodramatic as Patti LaBelle (they're somewhere in the middle), both come across better live than on record, and each enjoys a loyal cult following who collects anything they find by them and pays homage via dedicated websites. Brown and Thomas' cuts are embellished by larger-than-normal ensembles for '60s soul, while Dickerson's tracks, originally release on the budget-minded Pickwick Records, are not as embossed; her whiny delivery is more distinguished than Brown or Thomas' -- whines usually are -- but isn't as rich or as satisfying. And Dickerson's stick out like the oversized thumbs you see at sporting events, they make this hard-to-find LP an item -- where else are you going to find them?
