Liars Inc.
Enemy
Release Date: 2000
Label: Columbia

When Liars Inc. signed with Columbia after their scrappy debut, Superjaded, had already been released, the group took little time crafting this follow-up, Enemy, with producer Matt Hyde. Sonically and stylistically similar to Superjaded, Enemy is just a bit slicker than its predecessor, but the hard-edged alternative of this recording hardly represents any kind of musical U-turn for the band. Singer/guitarist and bandleader Raile deals out more of his first-rate riffs and vocal performances on highlights like "Harder Than It Seems" and the self-titled opener and the powerful "What's Inside Me." The cover of Lisa Loeb's "Stay" is pretty much a disappointment, proving that the one-named Raile and his bandmates (Dillinger on bass, along with co-guitarist Nathan December) are much better off working their own material. Much more difficult to find than their Foodchain records debut, Enemy is a real improvement on the Liars Inc. brand of cathartic, punk-tinged '90s hard rock. Vincent Jeffries, All Music Guide
