Lennie Niehaus
Live at Capozzoli's
Release Date: 2002
Label: Woofy

Lennie Niehaus has been best known through the years as a talented arranger, including for big bands (such as Stan Kenton's) and movie soundtracks (those of Clint Eastwood). But he was a fine altoist in the 1950s and, as this live set shows, he remained an excellent improviser. The CD has Niehaus teamed with Bill Perkins (on tenor and baritone), pianist Frank Strazzeri, bassist Tom Warrington, and drummer Paul Kreibich. Quite typically the ensembles include arranged passages by Niehaus, but there are also many strong solos along the way on eight standards and four originals. Highlights include "I'm Old Fashioned," "If I Should Lose You," Gerry Mulligan's "Limelight," and "Namely You." Fine hard bop/cool jazz music, with Perkins and Strazzeri also taking excellent solos along the way. Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
