A fairly straightforward romp through the Jonathan King hits collection, most dignified by the inclusion of a few tracks that the other single-disc comps omitted. His brutal assault on the Smurfs, renamed here "the Smurps," but unmistakable nevertheless; the infuriatingly catchy theme to TV's Entertainment USA; and more King hits than you can shake a stick at, all line up on an album that doesn't simply document one man's maniacal career, it also reminds us just how profound an impact Jonathan King has had on British pop. In borrowing from Kasenatz-Katz (and Jefferson Airplane) the basic principle that "No Man Is An Island -- He's An Archipelago," King has shown time and time again that, not only is it possible to fool all of the people all of the time, but most of the people actually enjoy being fooled. With an almost mathematical precision, he worked out the lowest common denominator in public taste and built an empire around it. And, while bubblegum pop purists no doubt ridicule him as much as everybody else, if Captain Sooper-Dooper ever gets around to publishing his "Birthday Honors" list, King's services to the industry will be the first thing off his pen.
