John Bunzow

When Stories of the Years was originally released in the mid-'90s, some initially thought that John Bunzow was, perhaps because of his affiliation with Liberty Records (then Garth Brooks' label), a typical young Nashville "hat act." Those few folks who actually heard the album were surprised to discover a refreshingly direct, no-nonsense country record that had more in common with Steve Earle's best work than with any dance-club pretty boys. The CD's opener, "Desolation Road," starts things off right with a kickin' rhythm section and propulsive slide guitar that's perfectly matched to Bunzow's mournful delivery. His vocals get even better on the ballads, and producer Pete Anderson (of Dwight Yoakam fame) smartly chooses sparse arrangements that are still interesting enough to complement, rather than just support, the songs. Luckily, Bunzow's songs are of a consistently high quality. Even his more pedestrian numbers have some distinguishing trait, be it a surprising melodic twist or a memorable turn of phrase. Really, only "Crowded Inside My Heart" falls short of the record's overall standard. Bunzow just doesn't seem convincing doing the Hank Jr. imitation -- he's much more successful on some of the other uptempo numbers, often sounding like a young Dwight Yoakam minus the over-exaggerated nasal twang.
