Johan Gielen

He doesn't even attempt to pull out even a single stop, but Johan Gielen at least has an ear for monstrously popular trance that doesn't make you want to embrace your laptop as you jump in the shower. So hello, York, System F, and Southside Spinners. Tally ho, an alleged live mix that coughs up some embarrassingly poor transitions ("Gothic Dream" and "Reach for Civilisation" are smooshed together as if Gielen was imagining how yummy ice cream is). Yet you wouldn't slam a garage band for being clumsy, would you? Alright, you might, but give him some slack. The song selection never dries up into cowardly uniformity like some of Gielen's peers (Angelic's "It's My Turn" shouldn't be kicked out of anybody's bed -- vocal warts and all) and there is a populist thrust here that retains a strength of ten men. Tight and responsive, he has somehow given one of the better trance statements of 2000. Dean Carlson, All Music Guide Tracks:
