One of the first releases issued by jazz guitarist Martin Taylor after he formed his label P3 Music was this unusual meeting with British folk guitarist Gordon Giltrap from the early 1990s. The 15 songs heard on these sessions are a mixture of duets and solo features by each player, some of which incorporate a guitar synthesizer for background color. Giltrap's acoustic solo "The Lords Seat" has a decidedly medieval flavor, while his "A Matter of Time" is based upon British classical composer Ralph Vaughan Williams' "Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis." Taylor's melodies are better vehicles for improvisation, including the pastoral duet "Collins Meadow" (which is heard in both studio and live performances) and the lyrical electric solo "Song for Alex." Martin Taylor has enjoyed a lot more freedom to explore his many musical interests since beginning P-3 Music and this project, which awaited commercial release for 14 years, is well worth exploring. Likewise, fans of Gordon Giltrap will stretch their musical horizons by investigating these performances. Ken Dryden, All Music Guide Tracks:
