Goober & the Peas

The follow-up to Goober & the Peas' debut, The Complete Works of Goober & the Peas, comes a bit harder, a bit louder, a bit more severe, and a bit less like a novelty act. They are not so silly this time around -- more punk than cowpunk. Songs like "Hurry Hurry," "Alienation," and "E Flat" border on hardcore. There is still something of the more humorous music that initially drew listeners to their concerts and their debut recording, such as "Cordially Invited" and "Jumpship." What they gain in becoming more a "musical act" than a "novelty act," they lose in terms of album continuity and connection with the listeners. Or, to rephrase, they are narrowing their target audience. A nice record if not altogether a unified effort. Mark W.B. Allender, All Music Guide Tracks:
