Along with Roni Size, Goldie is one of the most widely recognized members of the first generation of breakbeat junglists who emerged in Britain in the mid-'90s. But it could be argued that his greatest importance is less as a musician than as an impresario -- such respected DJs and producers as Source Direct, Photek, and Lemon D owe significant developments in their careers to opportunities that Goldie extended to them through his Metalheadz imprint. MDZ.05 is the latest in an ongoing series of Metalheadz compilations featuring both established stars and young up-and-comers, and it's sure to please the cultish fan base that awaits every new release on this label with keen anticipation. Some of these tracks are exclusive to this compilation, while others are featured in previously unreleased mixes. The bonus disc includes a long DJ mix and several bonus tracks. If there's anything negative to be said about the main disc, it's that you could cut off all the overlong and self-indulgent intro sections and you'd end up with a fantastic 60-minute album; as it is, it's a very good 77-minute album. Highlights include the tight and muscular jungle funk of Klute's "Can't See the Grooves" and the heavily reggae-inflected "Wastelands" by Marcus Intalex; especially fine is DJ Lee's "Tuning," which features both the heaviest and the most languid bassline of the program. Beta 2 gets bonus points for creativity on the slightly awkward "Closer to You," but he's no Spring Heel Jack, and ultimately that track falls rather flat. Highly recommended overall.
