Don Patterson
Movin' Up
Release Date: 1976 01 31
Label: Muse

At the time that Don Patterson recorded this album (his next-to-last as a leader), organ records had become fairly rare. The organ was in danger of being replaced altogether by synthesizers, and even Patterson utilizes an Arp String Ensemble in places. However, his playing on the six numbers is very much in the Jimmy Smith tradition. Altoist Richie Cole co-stars, and Vic Juris (Cole's guitarist) and drummer Billy James are both major assets. Cole contributed three of the six numbers, including "Trenton Makes the World Takes" and the "Cherokee"-based "Harold's House of Jazz," so this is very much a bop-oriented set. "The Good Life" is a feature for Patterson without Cole; also on the LP (not yet reissued on CD) are Horace Silver's "Room 608" and the theme song from the movie The World of Susie Wong. A fine effort that should please hard bop and soul-jazz collectors. Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
