Defunkt Live at the Knitting Factory NYC Release Date: 1994 08 02 Label: Knitting Factory Works Trombonist Joseph Bowie co-led and organized numerous editions of Defunkt, many with longtime section mate Bobo Shaw. Shaw wasn't aboard for this 1990 concert, but Bowie's crackling trombone solos remained a vital part of the group's sound. Guitarist Bill Bickford filled in the gaps with an array of spicy, flashy riffs, colors, and supporting phrases, while the other members smoothly handled the constantly changing atmosphere. Defunkt ripped through rock tunes, funk pieces, extended jazz vamps and blues, doing them all with humor and verve.
