Colorifics

Coming in the middle of the brief lounge/swing craze of the mid-'90s, the Colorifics' Living City is definitely one of the better efforts from any of the revival groups that seemed to spring up overnight. These young hipsters know the music and era that they're imitating and mostly they get it right. In particular, the Colorifics tackle several decades of music and mostly hit the nail on the head. Some of the songs sound like '40s or even '60s cool, hipster-style pop and those are the best tunes, especially the first two on the record, "City Grey" and "Soda Pop." Both are knockouts. The singer, Lindsey Davis, has a thin, pretty voice which has an Audrey Hepburn quality that is perfect for this sort of music. The other tunes vary in style. Maybe the swingy number "Vista Cruiser" doesn't really work, but most of the material here is top-notch. Adam Bregman, All Music Guide Tracks:
