Chubby Checker

In the wake of Bruce Springsteen's resurrection of Gary U.S. Bonds in 1981, several veteran rockers -- Del Shannon, Mitch Ryder, etc. -- were given second chances by the record companies. Chubby Checker, signed to MCA, did better than most. The sleek leadoff track, "Running," became Checker's first chart single in 13 years, and the LP was his first new collection to chart in nearly two decades. Rather than just twisting again, Checker updated his music much the way Springsteen had for Bonds -- in fact, the sound, complete with hot guitars, melodic keyboard textures, and prominent sax solos, was distinctly similar to Springsteen's neo-'60s rock approach. And Checker's wailing tenor and good rhythmic sense were well-suited to the material. It all added up to only a modest success, to be sure, but at least Checker finally could say he had more to offer than just "The Twist." William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide Tracks:
