Carmen McRae
This Is Carmen McRae
Label: KAPP

Carmen McRae is backed by several different orchestras on this compilation from three series of recording sessions made for Kapp in 1958 and 1959. The singer is at her most eloquent, conveying the emotion of each song in a swinging fashion. There are no personnel listings on this LP, except for the arrangers (Ernie Wilkins, Frank Hunter, or Luther Henderson), though the liner notes hint that McRae accompanies herself in the moving rendition of "Angel Eyes." She restores the often omitted verse to "The More I See You," backed by a sensitive arrangement by Henderson. Some of the musicians present include Art Farmer, Phil Woods, Jimmy Cleveland, Zoot Sims and Budd Johnson. Almost all of the tracks in this collection have been reissued on LP or CD by Decca or its later successive owners, MCA and GRP, but it is worth picking up if found at a reasonable price.
