Cal Tjader

Those who love Cal Tjader's Latin jazz work may be disappointed by this 1956 session, which features the vibraphonist in strict West Coast cool jazz mode with few Latin inflections beyond the occasional use of congas. Cool jazz fans, on the other hand, will probably enjoy hearing Tjader and company in this setting, which resembles some of Milt Jackson's solo albums from the same period. The set list is heavy on the standards, including a subtly conga-driven version of "Lullaby of Birdland" taken at an agreeably relaxed tempo and absolutely lovely versions of the ballads "Laura" and "Flamingo" that feature some of Tjader's most purely beautiful playing. The one Latin-based tune is a swinging take on Tito Puente's "Philadelphia Mambo," but even it sounds more like an experiment by the Modern Jazz Quartet than a true salsa band.
