Bill Berry
Ellington All-Stars
Release Date: 1978
Label: Drive Archives

This CD reissues an award-winning (for sound quality) Real Time direct-to-disc album, adding alternate takes of "Mood Indigo" and "I Got It Bad" to the original program. Cornetist Bill Berry gathered together a variety of veterans (altoist Marshall Royal, trombonist Britt Woodman, pianist Nat Pierce, bassist Ray Brown and drummer Frankie Capp) along with the young tenor Scott Hamilton to perform eight numbers associated with Duke Ellington. Each of the horns get some solo space with Royal's feature on "I Got It Bad" and the full group's jamming on "Perdido" and "Cotton Tail" being highpoints. Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
