Baby Teeth Album
Release Date: 2005 06 21
Label: Lujo Records

As the Fountains of Wayne and Ben Folds will tell you, there's a risk that comes with wryness. Go too far and you're in the company of Weird Al Yankovic. Chicago's Baby Teeth escape such a fate on the unfortunately titled The Baby Teeth Album by a delightfuly thin margin, as evidenced by the amusing, capable piano ballad "Mighty Time" -- where singer/keyboardist Pearly Sweets' Elton-like delivery and the band's overall easy listening allure collide with drug abuse via lyrics like "Just bring all the blow that you can find." This is pop in the vein of 1970s stylists like Chicago and Hall & Oates minus the seriousness. The group's success is limited, however, as the minute-long "Mandy" exhibits, while the Genesis-like progressive rock ballad "Dream" is about as welcome as an Abacab album cut. Still, Sweets' occasional pop blunders succeed more than they fail, as affirmed by the smile-inducing funk charmer "Celebrity Wedding." John D. Luerssen, All Music Guide
