Listening to BS2000's self-titled debut album is almost the equivalent of watching a Federico Fellini film or reading a William S. Burrows passage: You know something is supposed to be happening, but it's often obscured, or diluted, by anxious and unnecessary additives. With the assistance of their ubiquitous E-Mu SP1200 sampling drum machine, Adam Horovitz and Amery Smith, the two mad scientists who operate under the BS2000 guise, created a 35-minute, 23-track, aural assault that sounds like little more than a nervous collage of breakbeats and odd overdubbed samples. While there are moments of near-brilliance, like "Go With the Flow" and "Thrift King," they are fleeting, and much of the record makes for an obtuse listening experience. Most cuts, including "Nobody Beats BS," "No Answer," and "O.J." sound disjointed, almost as if the samples were created for a different set of beats. Perhaps in an attempt to increase (or preserve) the underground buzz of the BS2000 debut, Grand Royal released the album exclusively on vinyl, and made it available through their website for only a limited time. This obscure record could be a great addition to a DJ or producer's booth, but it takes a seriously dedicated fan, or an acquired taste, to appreciate its eccentricities.
