B.A.L.L.
Period
Release Date: 1987
Label: Shimmy Disc

B.A.L.L.'s first album was a stab at post-modern musical satire, with the grungy quartet deconstructing rock classics and writing songs that ridiculed the self-absorbed obsessions of the '70s. In theory, it's a clever idea, yet Period only was partially successful because the band had neither written enough hooks to make their originals memorable, nor had they developed a distinctive sound. Nevertheless, there are enough isolated moments of infectious audacity to make Period worthwhile. Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide
