Alyssa Milano
Look in My Heart
Release Date: 1989
Label: Canyon Int'l

If it is pure, unfiltered cheese one expects -- with no anticipation of a deep or substantial main course to go with it -- then famed actress Alyssa Milano's debut album is a surefire bet. One of four original collections the teenaged celebrity recorded for the Japanese Pony Canyon label, Look in My Heart relies on ultra-synthesized, kiddie-lyric dance-pop numbers that blend one into the other. Swarms of emotion are found in neither the sugar-coated arrangements nor Milano's raw, often dazed voice, but catchy ditties like the title cut and "What a Feeling" are solid reminders that music doesn't always have to be serious. The powers that be exercised no pretension in the selection of the singer's material and production: It's not overly challenging or dramatic, and is perfectly suited to her inexperienced but friendly approach to the music. Likewise, Milano doesn't attempt to live up to standards of the American teen market set by peers Debbie Gibson and Tiffany. However, there are a few undeniably weak numbers here in the sleepy "Born to Love" and the inexcusable "Da Doo Ron Ron/Magic in Your Eyes Medley." Otherwise, it's campy fun that can be taken with many grains of salt, although the follow-up album, Alyssa, is a bit stronger in the long run. Justin M. Kantor, All Music Guide
