It’s Friday, Friday, gotta get down on Friday! Would you believe I watched that video for the first time this week? Yeah, I’m really late. But you don’t have to be late on what’s going on in Hip Hop and R&B this week! Here’s what you may have missed while obsessing over what Kanye West’s VMA rant may be like this year, if we’re lucky.
Chris Brown has had enough. The singer who turned himself in at a California jail earlier this week to be booked then released within an hour, is hinting that he will probably retire after the release of his next album. “I’m tired of paying for a mistake I made when I was 18,” the singer tweeted. “I’m cool and over it!” The arrest stemmed from the alleged hit-and-run Chris was involved with in May. Chris is set to return to court on August 15 for the case and will have another court date set-up for a probation violation hearing. It has been years after the event and it seems Chris is still paying for his mistake.
I know this is a silly question, but do you remember Damon Dash? He was the charming fellow who was Jay Z’s right hand man or appeared to be that. He’s best remembered dancing in Jay Z’s video’s shirtless with a bottle of liquor in one hand. Well, don’t judge a book by its cover because Damon was far more important than that. Damon was actually a co-founder of Roc-A-Fella records and a huge staple in the label’s success next to Jay Z. So you can imagine the joy many 90’s Hip Hop fans experienced when they spotted photos of the two gentleman laughing and conversing at a recent birthday party of a mutual friend. Many jumped to the conclusion that their friendship had been mended while others wondered if there was ever a problem between the two to begin with. At any rate, nostalgic fans rejoiced at the sight of them together for sure.
Nicki Minaj damages a friendship over he said/she said
Nicki Minaj was approached while leaving a party in Los Angeles and was asked what her thoughts were on a friend (a rapper name Ransom) claiming in a song that he ghostwrote lyrics for her back when Nicki wasn’t very well known. Well, to say that Nicki spoke her mind would be an understatement. This is a family site/column so I’ll paraphrase. Nicki accused the rapper of being jealous of her success and because of that jealousy he made up the lie that he wrote songs for her. She also attributed Ransom’s lie to him being desperate and seeing a lack of success and needing to use her for attention. Turns out, according to Ransom, the lyric in question (“Before Nicki was wearing those crazy wigs/ I was doing verses for her/ just hoping she made it) wasn’t him claiming that he ghostwrote lyrics for her. Ransom promises that the lyrics were taken out of context. After Nicki Minaj’s response was reported on blogs and website’s galore, Nicki and Ransom had an exchange via twitter where Nicki admitted that the lyrics were taken wrong but that she wasn’t sorry for her response because she needed to protect her credibility no matter what. Ransom was not pleased. Another case of he said/she said going wrong. I always hated that telephone game.
