Wish You Were Dead Review: Casting director veteran Valerie McCaffrey turns director for this one and succeeds in getting plenty of genuine laughs in this decidedly dark and uncomfortable farce, her debut feature. The characters in this bizarre fantasy are full-bodied, backwoods lunatics, with Christopher Lloyd, as the goofily endearing Macbeth's unkempt boss, and Mary Steenburgen, funny and slutty, leading an inspired cast peppered with mid-level luminaries including Kiss frontman Gene Simmons, Shannon Tweed, a very brave Sally Kirkland, Billy Ray Cyrus, and Robert Englund. Well-paced action, comical homicides, and daffy dialogue make this comparable to Very Bad Things and other indie black comedies. Wish You Were Dead -- the contempt of the title says it all -- has much going for it except awareness. Buzz McClain, All Movie Guide |
