The Mighty Ducks Review: Disney mines familiar territory with The Mighty Ducks. A motley collection of stereotypical misfits and outsiders (the tough girl, the fat kid, the brooding bully with the big talent) gel together with the help of a coach who does not want the job, but warms to it after growing feelings for the kids. That the film works as well as it does is a direct result of the charm of the actors. Emilio Estevez never acts above the material, and the kids are cute if not terribly memorable (although Joshua Jackson would become famous years later on Dawson's Creek). This film is competent enough to work very well for young viewers who are unfamiliar with the generic story line, and the direction and acting are good enough to make it possible for adults to sit through it. The surprise hit spawned numerous sequels, and probably had more than a little bit to do with Disney buying a real NHL franchise that they named the Mighty Ducks. Perry Seibert, All Movie Guide |
