Telephone Operator Review: Monogram's Telephone Operator is one of those cheap Poverty Row movies that it is very hard to dislike. Everyone, including leading lady Judith Allen, tries their best, but Scott R. Dunlap's budget is just too small for comfort. The story, about telephone linesmen alternately romancing a couple of girls and battling the elements, was filmed many times before and after. The protagonists weren't always linesmen, of course, but could be any kind of rugged workers, but it remains hard to differentiate between Telephone Operator and Warner Brothers' slicker but equally monotonous Slim, released that very same year. Meanwhile, telephone operator Alice White and linesman Warren Hymer are quickly paired off -- and a perfectly dimwitted match they make -- while it takes a bit longer for Miss Allen to truly appreciate Grant Withers' masculine charms. But she finally does, in what can only be described as a rather soggy finale. Hans J. Wollstein, All Movie Guide |
