Mee-Shee: The Water Giant Review:
Mee-Shee: The Water Giant is a delightful family film that will appeal to kids and to the kid in many grown-ups. The character of Mee Shee is a lake monster, and there's something about this cryptozoological mystery that can't help but raise one's curiosity and interest. The folks at Jim Henson's Creature Shop have done an excellent job of creating an animal that satisfies the various real-life theories of what Mee-Shee could be -- a plesiosaur, a manatee, a walrus, etc. -- and is still very appealing. More importantly, they operate and manipulate him in a manner that makes him absolutely endearing without being cloying. But Mee-Shee succeeds not because of its special effects (some of which, in the CGI department, are a little sloppy), but because the story at its center is heartwarming and told with conviction. It's true that the basic elements -- busy father, ignored son, etc. -- have been done many times, but director John Henderson and his cast handle each familiar element as if it were freshly minted. And while Barry Authors' screenplay does contain situations we've seen many times before, he makes his characters individual enough that most viewers won't care. Mee-Shee is also enormously helped by its cast. Daniel Magder turns in an appealing central performance, and Bruce Greenwood's quiet but conviction-filled performance is letter-perfect. There's also solid support from Luanne Gordon, Tom Jackson, and Joe Pingue and some of the best pure-evil villainy from Charles Mesure and Joel Tobeck. Some adults may find Mee-Shee a little too simple for their tastes, but audiences willing to give in to the wonders of the lake legend will have a grand time. Craig Butler, All Movie Guide
