Kathy Griffin: Allegedly Review:
From her inauspicious big break on the TV sitcom Suddenly Susan to the 2005 debut of her Bravo series Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List, Kathy Griffin has slowly carved out a niche for herself as a Hollywood outsider who'd rather throw shade on the famous and fabulous than become one of them. This stand-up special finds the actress and comic in fine form -- at ease with her quasi-celebrity and willing to confirm our worst impressions of Hollywood's pampered elite. Though Kathy Griffin: Allegedly is full of celebrity encounters, from a Barbara Walters bitch-slap to an altercation with Renée Zellweger, it's Griffin's extended anecdote about the wedding of friend and former co-star Brooke Shields that provides both the best laughs and the most subtext about the Us Weekly generation. If Griffin is willing to dish so naughtily about even those A-, B-, and C-listers she counts as friends, she may find it increasingly hard to retain her access to the celebrities whose shenanigans provide her with her best material. Until then, her running obsession with and critique of the Beverly Hills pecking order is a wonderfully self-aware work in progress. Brian J. Dillard, All Movie Guide
