Green Card Review: Internationally renowned French film star Gérard Depardieu made his first bid at Hollywood success with the light romantic comedy Green Card. Director Peter Weir wrote the part specifically for the actor; it was his first English-language role of any note. Though he continued to appear in American productions -- including the big-budget 1492: Conquest of Paradise (1992) and the dreadful remake of My Father the Hero (1994) -- few were as well-received as Green Card. The actor is complemented by his appealing co-star, Andie MacDowell, and Weir gives his predictable material a breezy touch. A moderate success, Green Card was clearly not in the same box-office league as Weir's previous mainstream hits, Dead Poets Society and Witness. Weir garnered an Academy Award nomination for his original screenplay. Brendon Hanley, All Movie Guide |
