Every now and then comes along a song that perfectly captures the essence of the season.  ‘Hey There Darlin’ video from indie-folk artist, Morgan Cameron Ross says it all about summer lovin'.  He writes candidly and introspectively.  His passionate voice caresses every word he sings.

I had the pleasure to speak with this crooner about his music, relationship and everything else in between.

What is your process for writing music?

My writing process varies.  I’d like to tell people I’m this prolific, disciplined author, spending months editing and brainstorming.  In reality, my best songs are written in an hour. It forces me to say exactly what’s on my mind.

How did you come up with Hey There Darlin’?

I wrote ‘Hey there Darlin’ with a good friend of mine, Ian Smith.  He and I sat down with a couple guitars and proclaimed that we wanted to write something simple, to the point, positive and a bit tongue in cheek.

What was your idea for the overall sound of this song?

We wanted the song to feel like something you’d listen to while driving in a convertible in the summer.

Supermodel Tara Gill has a reoccurring role in your videos. What is your relationship?

Tara and I fluctuate between being friends and a serious couple.  We both travel a lot, so it’s clearly not an easy life.

What do you want your audience to experience when they hear your music and watch your videos?

I pride my music on being honest and not having gone through the traditional amount of filters a signed artist has to put them through before release.  I’ve maintained complete creative control, and what people hear is what I’m trying to say.  I’m lucky and proud of this.

Describe your first instrument you ever played.

I played the trumpet for a good, tedious, three years in elementary school.  It hurt my lips though, so I stopped. I took up guitar sometime in high school and haven’t looked back.

What are your fondest musical memories?

I’ve been lucky enough to tour the world with music, play with some of my idols, and meet tons of great folks.  All of this said, my favorite part of music is sitting down and writing songs.  My favorite musical moments would have to be finishing certain portions of certain songs of mine.

What artists influences you and why?

I would say I’m heavily influenced by honest boys with acoustic guitars.  Elliott Smith is a great example.  He was painfully honest, even when all he could talk about was pain.  Ryan Adams’ use of the English language is gorgeous. I would be lying if I didn’t have a burning desire to sound like his first record, Heartbreaker.

Who would you want to do a duet with?

Have you ever forgotten your own lyrics when performing live?

I’ve forgotten lyrics plenty of times.  It’s inevitable.  Sometimes it’s because an artist has had a few too many drinks, sometimes it’s because they notice a cute girl or guy in the audience.  It happens, and it’ll happen again.

Are you going on tour and where does your tour start?

For a few months, starting the first week of December.
