The "Thriller" hitmaker passed away on June 25, 2009, after suffering a cardiac arrest brought on by an overdose of anaesthetic Propofol, and fans have honored the late star by voting him into top place in a new NME.com poll.
Queen frontman Freddie Mercury came a close second, while Elvis Presley placed third.
Guns N' Roses star Axl Rose came in fourth and John Lennon rounded out the top five.
David Bowie, Robert Plant, Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder and Aretha Franklin all featured in the top 10.
