It was a direct "slap in the face" of the current culture and the capitalistic bourgoise and their lassez - faire ideals where the dadist thought that the "reason" and "logic" of the bourgoise capitalistic society led people into war. It was not so much art as it was "anti - art."  The most important proponent of the Dadaist movement in America was an American artist  named Man Ray who, in 1916, joined forces with Marcel Duchamp, Frances Picabia, both of whom arrived in New York from France, and Beatrice Wood, who had been studying in France at the time, and would later join them.
