Madonna Supports Malawi's New President
Madonna has thrown her support behind Malawi's new female president and voiced her hopes that she will continue to advocate education for girls in the country.
Madonna has adopted two children from the African nation and hopes to revitalize the education system by building a number of girls schools with her Raising Malawi charity.
The country's leader, Bingu wa Mutharika, died of a heart attack on April 5th and Joy Banda was drafted in as his replacement last Saturday, becoming the country's first female president.
Madonna, who interviewed Banda for her 2008 documentary I Am Because We Are, has now revealed she is happy to see the politician take charge of Malawi.
Speaking at a promotional event for her new perfume in New York, the Material Girl called Banda "amazing," adding, "She was really into girls being educated in Africa, which is a good thing. So, I'm glad (she is now president)."
