ABC's Sing Your Face Off became our jaw-dropping guilty pleasure of the summer last week, watching celebrities transformed into music superstars, but what's it like to actually be on the show? BFTV asked soap star Lisa Rinna to tell us about her experience so far in what might be one of the quirkiest competition shows we've ever seen.
"I read the synopsis of the show and I thought, this sounds like the most fun, and what a genius idea!" Lisa enthused. "I just thought what a challenge to become pop icons. I think I have a secret rock star living inside of me. Doesn't everyone?"
But the show isn't about pretending to be your favorite rocker; it's about trying to impersonate people you'd probably never even think to attempt. Last week, we saw Lisa have to turn herself into Dolly Parton and Britney Spears. But the best is yet to come.
"I think for me the most memorable, as you'll see this week, is my being Justin Bieber," she revealed. "And I think it speaks for itself. To have to play a fourteen-year-old boy who's a pop icon, who is one of the most famous people on the planet, was challenging."
At least she wasn't going it alone - she knew two other members of the Sing Your Face Off cast before she joined the show. As she told us, "I know Debbie Gibson; she's a friend of mine. I knew Debbie, and I knew Jon [Lovitz] - I met Jon maybe 23 years ago when he was on Saturday Night Live; I met him in New York - and that is always helpful when you know people."
One person she didn't know before but was vastly impressed by? Host John Barrowman. "He's like my long-lost brother, I've decided," she enthused. "I love him so much. I think he is such a fantastic human being, and he's a great host. He's one of my favorite people. I fell in love with John Barrowman. He was so game [and] he and I together, we just created havoc, I would say!"
Lisa knows her way around reality TV; she's hosted, appeared in two seasons of Celebrity Apprentice, and she and her husband Harry Hamlin even had their own program called Harry Loves Lisa. Does she enjoy getting to endear herself to TV audiences as herself, as opposed to playing a fictional character?
"I've been really fortunate in my career to do so many different things," she told us. "I love acting and playing a character. I also enjoy being myself, I have to say. And I'm lucky to be able to do both. I've had a great career."
Her husband was in the audience during last week's episode, so we asked her what he - and her other family and friends - have thought when they've seen her sporting a Dolly Parton-esque fake chest or a Britney-style school uniform.
"I think shock is the first reaction," she laughed. "My family and friends know me, so they know I'm crazy and I'll pretty much do anything. The second thing they say is 'Wow, good for you. you were fantastic.' They've been really supportive, and they enjoy it. My kids, they are having fun with it and they're watching the show with their friends, and I think that's a good sign..They're not embarrassed to show their friends!"
Two more hours of Sing Your Face Off start at 9 PM ET/PT tonight on ABC. For more on Lisa, visit her official website (lisarinna.com) and follow her on Twitter (@lisarinna).
