Justin Bieber Wins Worst Album Award At NME Awards; Florence Welch Triumphs
Florence Welch and her Florence + The Machine bandmates have ended Adele's accolades haul with a double win at the NME Awards in London on Wednesday.
Welch and her band beat the multiple Grammy and Brit Awards winner to the Best Solo Artist and Best Track trophies at the O2 Brixton Academy ceremony, while nailing one of the night's highlight performances.
Other big winners at the 2012 prizegiving, which honors British indie rock, included Foo Fighters (Best International Band), The Horrors (Best Album for Skying) and Arctic Monkeys (Best Live Band).
Kasabian were named Best British Band and band member Tom Meighan kicked off his acceptance speech with a touching tribute to The Monkees singer Davy Jones, who suffered a heart attack and died early on Wednesday.
Taking the stage, he led the crowd in a rendition of Monkees theme tune "Hey Hey! We're The Monkees" and he later dedicated the band's trophy to the memory of the "Daydream Believer" singer, stating, "I want to dedicate it to Davy Jones from The Monkees who died today. He was 66 years old. My mother loved The Monkees."
Other winners included Hurts, Katy B and The Vaccines, while former The Smiths star Johnny Marr was on hand to recognize Noel Gallagher with the Godlike Genius award.
Presenting the honor, Marr said, "Noel makes (songwriting) look easier than it really is - the mark of a true genius."
