Jada Pinkett Smith took advantage of the time she was given to speak at the Television Critic Association to address the topic of sexual assault and revealed her niece was almost a victim.

Pinkett Smith recently spoke up about the topic on her Twitter account after the hashtag #justiceforjada began to trend, in reference to a 16-year-old who was drugged and raped. She wrote, "This could be you, me, or any woman or girl that we know. What do we plan to do about this ugly epidemic?"

Pinkett Smith followed that up on Sunday during the TCA panel for FOX's upcoming series Gotham. She revealed (via the New York Daily News), "My niece was given a date rape drug that weekend. She’s 20 years old – thank God nothing happened because she was with some responsible guys that took care of her.

"She was safe because she was with a group of friends that realized [what was happening]. She said, 'Oh, my god, I can’t feel my...' and she started losing consciousness."

The actress says she had her niece sit down with her daughter Willow and her friends to discuss her experience and educate them. "It’s one thing to sit with me as her mother. It’s like 'Okay, Mom, yeah, I get that.' But when you have your 20-year-old cousin that comes in, and she’s like, 'This is what happened,' and it was somebody you looked up to as well, it’s like, 'Oh, man, this is really real.'"
