'Gilligan's Island' Star Russell Johnson, AKA The Professor, Dies At 89
Gilligan's Island star Russell Johnson, who played Professor Roy Hinkley on the classic TV sitcom, has died.
The actor passed away at his Bainbridge Island, Washington, home from Kidney failure on Thursday. Johnson's publicist, Michael Eisenstadt, confirmed the news.
"Gilligan's Island" co-star Dawn Wells broke the news on her Facebook page, posting an image of herself with Johnson and the show's star, Bob Denver.
"My 2 favorite people are now gone," she wrote, referring to Johnson and Denver. "The professor past (sic) away this morning. My heart is broken."
Denver died in 2005 from complications of cancer treatments he had been receiving. He was 70.
"Russell was a true gentleman, a good father, a great friend, and "the rest," she added. "I love him and shall miss him. My heart goes out to (his wife) Connie and his daughter Kim. I love you."
Before going into acting, Johnson served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II.
He is also survived by a stepson, Court Dane, and one grandson.
Wells and actress Tina Louise are the last surviving members of the show's cast.
