Summary:
In the world of Nightopia where our dreams are played out lurks Wizeman the Wicked. Through his creation of Nightmaren, this evil being is gaining tremendous power by capturing precious dream energy from human beings and using it to emerge from our subconscious into the real world.

Four energies of the dreamworld are controlled by Wizeman, but there is a rare fifth energy signifying the bravery that he doesn't yet control. NiGHTS, an aerial acrobatic, is said to be the only dreamtime creature not controlled by Wizeman. Attracted to the fifth energy, he believes that Elliot and Claris are blessed with this energy and is willing to help them in order to restore dreams to their former state. Yet in order to restore peace among the dreamworld, you're going to have to face your worst nightmares.

NiGHTS Into Dreams... is a 3D platform game that takes place through dreamworlds created by your character's subconscious mind. Taking control of either Elliot or Claris, you'll soon encounter a character called NiGHTS who will offer help in your travels. By merging, you take control of NiGHTS and are blessed with all the abilities and powers he is capable of. This acrobat can fly, spin, dash and hover his way through each world at supersonic speeds.

The goal is to collect 20 blue chips and take them to the Ideya Capture area, then exit through the Ideya Palace within the specified time. Each level is not sectioned off, but rather continues seamlessly from the past level in groups of four, with the final level beaming NiGHTS into a nightmare world where you battle one of the Wizeman's henchmen. Control in NiGHTS Into Dreams... (while in NiGHTS form) is restricted to a 2D plane, but the plane twists, spins, loops and changes directions right throughout each level to provide an almost dream-like roller coaster ride. Special controls include times where players are required to blobsled, ride connected to a magnet, glide through a museum, and catch a train instead of the usual aerial flying and gliding techniques popular in this Sonic Team release.

Players can also remain in their normal human form and trek through each of the levels by foot (for a certain distance anyway). Though the size of the worlds makes this a slow experience, the added arrow directions simplify the process and sometimes it is must when NiGHTS has disappeared because your time limit has run out. Each character will also have to battle through three unique levels set through Antarctic conditions, canyons, museums, gardens, valleys, forests and more.

Apart from the blue chips that must be collected, bonus points can be gained by collecting chips, star chips, rings and power loops. Minions placed around each of the levels can also make aerial moves difficult and even more worrying is that some can diminish your time limit if they strike. Bosses can also diminish your time limit but are much more destructive and only engaged at the end of every world.

These henchman make life hell by using dangerous attacks against you, but be brave as each boss bares a weakness that must be exerted if victory is likely. These bosses include Reala who bears resemblance to NiGHTS, Gulpo a demon with razor sharp teeth, Clawz a flying horned creature, Wizeman the evil one himself, Jackle a winged joker, Puffy a creature with a bouncy ball as a body and Gillwing a flying dragon.

A special two-player Vs. mode is also unlocked once Reala has been defeated and works with similar conditions intact to boss battles. Brad Penniment, All Game Guide
