'Friday Night Lights' Author Buzz Bissinger Checks Into Rehab For Shopping Addiction
Friday Night Lights author Buzz Bissinger has entered into rehab after confessing he has a shopping addiction.
The writer, whose novel inspired the movie and TV drama of the same name, reveals he has spent over $600,000 in the past three years on designer clothes and his problem has become so crippling, he is now seeking professional help.
In an essay for the new issue of GQ magazine, he writes, "I own 81 leather jackets, 75 pairs of boots, 41 pairs of leather pants, 32 pairs of haute couture jeans, 10 evening jackets, and 115 pairs of leather gloves. I have an addiction...
"It isn't drugs or gambling: I get to keep what I use after I use it. But there are similarities: the futile feeding of the bottomless beast and the unavoidable psychological implications, the immediate hit of the new that feels like an orgasm and the inevitable coming-down... I love the sexual rush to the degree that I wonder if it has become a replacement for actual sex.
"But just like (sex), the magic of new clothing wears off quickly, and you can't resist the cravings for new purchases... It started three years ago. I have never fully revealed it, and am only revealing it now in the hopes that my confession will incite a remission and perhaps help others of similar compulsion."
In the article, the 58 year old also admits to cross-dressing and experimenting with his sexuality, but he has since checked himself into an undisclosed facility and released a statement about the shocking editorial, which reads, "I wrote it because it was the only way I knew of coming to terms and getting the help I am now getting. I have no regrets about what I wrote but I also have nothing to add. The story speaks for itself."
