Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas

Great movie (and book!) or what? Johnny Depp and Benicio Del Toro do such a great job as Hunter S. Thompson and Raoul Duke. Hilarious lines and wacky scenes. I love the book even more than the movie though.

Raoul Duke: Few people understand the psychology of dealing with a highway traffic cop. Your normal speeder will panic and immediately pull over to the side. This is wrong. It arouses contempt in the cop-heart. Make the bastard chase you. He will follow.

This is a #@#%$ amazing movie and book, you're right. Terry Gilliam managed to keep pretty close to the book although he stopped the movie about half way through. They are also making a movie of the Rum Diaries, can't wait until it comes out.

"You can turn your back on a person, but, never turn your back on a drug. Especially when it's waving a razor-sharp hunting knife in your eye".

"We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a saltshaker half-full of cocaine, and a whole galaxy of uppers, downers, laughers, screamers... Also, a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether, and two dozen amyls. Not that we needed all that for the trip, but once you get into a serious drug collection, the tendency is to push it as far as you can. The only thing that really worried me was the ether. There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge, and I knew we'd get into that rotten stuff pretty soon".

I love the part where they are driving to Vegas and Raouls attorney lets the coke blow away, he kinda screams. The hitchhiker part is really funny too. Also has a great soundtrack, I don't think there is anything bad to say about it.

I like the scene in the hotel room when Dr. Gonzo wants Duke to throw the tape machine in the bathtub.

It's so hard to believe people either don't like this or havn't seen it as noone else feels the need to post.

Other great scenes are when Raoul and Dr. Gonzo are in the Circus Circus after the ether.

Also when they throw the money at the dwarf waiter after he brings them the phone and then shuts the door on his face.

Speaking of this scene, what Gonzo says is really hard to make out, does he say something here about the rabbit eating it's own head off? Or is that just from the book?

The book was based on real events but was also pretty exaggerated, what you class as #@$%#$ up, I obviously class as #@#%$ genius.

Here's the quote from the script:

Back the tape up.  I need it again!
Let it roll!  Just as high as the
#@#%$ can go!  And when it comes
to that fantastic note where the
rabbit bites its own head off, I
want you to THROW THAT #@#%$
RADIO INTO THE TUB WITH ME!

^Thanks for the help

"History is hard to know, because of all the hired bullsh**, but even without being sure of "history" it seems entirely reasonable to think that every now and then the energy of a whole generation comes to a head in a long fine flash, for reasons that nobody really understands at the time - and which never explain, in retrospect, what actually happened".

Gees, this is one movie I forgot to mention in the Depp Movie thread! How could I forget about Hunter? He was super and I will miss the Good Doctor.

I think Hunter's ashes will be shot out from a cannon by Depp, family and friends. It looks as if it will happen.

Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas sequel with Johnny Depp
« Reply #14 on: May 20, 2005, 02:59:06 pm »

Depp To Reprise Role as Hunter S. Thompson

Johnny Depp is set to reprise his acclaimed role as journalist Hunter S. Thompson in the sequel to his 1998 hit Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas. The follow up, called The Rum Diary, is based on Thompson's very first novel, which journals his career and personal escapades in 1950s Puerto Rico. Depp is also acting as executive producer for the film. Thompson shot himself to death at his secure compound in Woody Creek, Colorado, on February 20.
