 She had a difficult time at school because she suffered an "identity crisis" as she was growing up. She was raised in Houston, Texas and was the only black girl in her class. She admits she found herself longing to fit in with her peers, and even dreamed of lightening her skin color. She tells Britain's Heat magazine, "There's so much peer pressure, growing up I had an identity crisis - I went to a school that was predominantly white and I was the only black girl. I remember thinking, 'I don't want to be as dark as I am, I want to be a little fairer. I didn't want to be me." She credits her band mate Beyonce's mother, Tina Knowles, for helping to restore her confidence. She says, "She sat me in front of the mirror and said, 'Girl, look at how pretty you are'. She made me feel comfortable in my own skin." She finally shook off her insecurities as she reached adulthood, and the experience encouraged her to work with charities to help young women boost their self-esteem. She adds, "When I got older, I embraced who I am as a woman. I look in the mirror and I'm like, 'I like her. She not so bad.' I think that it's important to instill that in our girls, to know that they posses something special and that everybody's not supposed to be the same." |

She has dismissed reports she and her former band mates Beyonce and Michelle Williams are working on one final Destiny's Child album, urging eager fans to "simmer down." She parted ways in 2005 to embark on solo careers. Rumors recently surfaced claiming the trio was heading back into the recording studio to make a fifth studio disc because they were said to be contractually obliged to Sony Music subsidiary Columbia Records to deliver another project. However she insists there is no such album or contract clause - and there has been no talk of a reunion just yet. She tells the NYPost.com's PopWrap blog, "There is no Destiny's Child album in the works. None of us have talked about an album or anything. And until we do, no one else should worry about it. Simmer down now!" All three members have achieved success in their own right since the band's split. She is juggling her singing career with presenting duties for reality TV's The Fashion Show; Williams is currently starring in the West End stage production of Chicago in London, and Beyonce has been wowing audiences with her global I Am... tour, as well as starring in movies like recent thriller Obsessed. |
